07-06-1936 to 04-15-2024
Shirley Ruth Henderson-Jones, born to the parentage of Turner Henderson and Lula Tennison Henderson, was born on July 6, 1936 in Terrell, Texas. She had 10 siblings. She was a graduate of Burnett High School, the class of 1956. In December of 1955 she married Russell Jones, Jr., and to their union, eight (8) children were born. Shirley accepted Christ at an early age at the Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. W.G. Shepherd. She joined the New Hope Baptist Church in 1969 under the pastorate of Rev. M.E. Johnson, where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.
Shirley found a great deal of pleasure in pursuing her favorite pastimes of gardening, sewing, crocheting, and word puzzles, to name a few. She took sewing classes from Mrs. Sherman at SWCC and became an accomplished seamstress, even making most of her children’s clothing. She was also an amazing cook. She was the legendary babysitter for the entire south Terrell community, raising or helping raise at least two generations of children, in addition to her own. Shirley was a warrior/fighter/walking miracle. On March 4th 2014 her heart stopped while she was in Lake Pointe Hospital. After almost 20 minutes, she was resuscitated and showed no signs of injury or brain damage. She lived the next ten years living life, and that more abundantly. She went on two cruises, trips to the cabins with her entire family and numerous other activities. She was a lady of elegance. Every other week she had standing appointments to get their hair and nails “did”! She was called home on April 15th, 2024 after a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Turner and Lula Henderson, her siblings Gloria Evans, James Earl Henderson and Charles Henderson. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 68 years, Russell Jones, Jr., her eight children, Harold (Marilyn), Larry, Sandra, Vincent (Donna), Rajah, Kennedy (Marcy), Collette (Gary) and Lynette (Darrell); her sisters, Gladys Davis, Ella Mae Wilson, and Freddie Estes, and her brothers, Clezell Henderson, Donald W. Henderson, Al Ray Henderson (Nellie), and Jessie L. Henderson. She leaves 17 grand children, 21 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. She also had two special adopted daughters, Arlena Jones and Erma (Lois) Jones.
